What is Kaloba and when is it used?

Kaloba is a herbal remedy and contains an extract from the roots of Pelargonium sidoides, a medicinal plant found only in South Africa.

Kaloba is used for acute bronchitis (inflammation of the bronchi).

What should be considered?

For coughs that last longer than 7 days, with a fever lasting several days If there are indications of liver dysfunction, such as yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes, dark urine, severe pain in the upper abdomen, loss of appetite, as well as the occurrence of shortness of breath or bloody sputum, a doctor or pharmacist must be consulted.

When should Kaloba not be taken or only with caution?

Kaloba must not be taken:

  • If there is a known over sensitivity to the active ingredient or one of the other ingredients of the drug
  • In the case of severe liver diseases
  • Be careful if there is an increased tendency to bleed and when using anticoagulants (oral anticoagulants such as warfarin, phenprocoumon)

Coughs in children under 2 years of age should be clarified by a doctor. Therefore, the medicine should not be used in children under the age of 2 years without prior medical examination.

Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

  • suffer from other diseases
  • have allergies or
  • take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!)!

May Kaloba be used during pregnancy or be taken while breastfeeding?

As a precaution, you should not take the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as there is insufficient experience in this regard.

How do you use Kaloba?

Unless otherwise prescribed, adults and adolescents over the age of 12 years take 30 drops 3 times a day.

Children aged 6-12 years take 20 drops 3 times a day and children from 2 to 5 years receive 3- 10 drops a day.

The drops should be taken with some liquid.

The treatment duration should not exceed 3 weeks.

Observe the instructions given in the package leaflet or those recommended by your doctor or nurse. dosage prescribed by the doctor. If the desired improvement does not occur during the treatment of a small child/child, a doctor should be consulted with him or her. What side effects can Kaloba have?

Occasionally, gastrointestinal problems (e.g. stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea) can occur. In rare cases, slight bleeding from the gums or nose can occur. In addition, hypersensitivity reactions have been described in rare cases (skin rash, hives, itching of the skin and mucous membranes). Such reactions can occur even after the first use of the drug.

In very rare cases, severe hypersensitivity reactions with facial swelling, shortness of breath and drop in blood pressure can occur.

In individual cases there were indications of liver dysfunction whose causal connection with the intake of Kaloba is not certain.

What else should be considered?

Plant extracts in the form of drops can become toxic after a long period of timetend to become cloudy, but this has no effect on effectiveness. Kaloba is a natural product, slight variations in color and taste may occur.

Do not store above 30 °C. Keep medicines out of the reach of children. The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked “EXP” on the container. Kaloba has a shelf life of 6 months after opening the container. Your doctor, pharmacist or druggist can provide you with further information.

What does Kaloba contain?

1 g solution contains: 800 mg liquid extract (1:8–10) from the roots of Pelargonium sidoides. Contains glycerol and ethanol. Extraction agent: ethanol 11% (m/m).

The medicine contains 12% alcohol by volume.
