Description

What is NeoCitran Hustensolver and when is it used?

NeoCitran Hustensolver is a cough medicine that liquefies the viscous mucus in the airways, promotes expectoration and relieves the urge to cough. NeoCitran Hustensolver is used to relieve coughing and promote expectoration, primarily in the case of colds of the upper respiratory tract.

What should be considered?

The effect of NeoCitran Hustensolver is promoted by drinking plenty of it. Smoking contributes to the build-up of mucus in the airways and a cough (“smoker's cough”). You can support the effect of NeoCitran Hustensolver by not smoking.

NeoCitran Hustensolver Syrup is sweetened with saccharin and sorbitol and is therefore also suitable for diabetics.

When should NeoCitran Hustensolver Syrup not be used?

NeoCitran Hustensolver Syrup should not be used if you are hypersensitive to the active ingredient guaifenesin or one of the excipients (see «What does NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contain?»), or if you suffer from a (rare) hereditary disease of the sugar metabolism, the so-called fructose intolerance. NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contains sorbitol as a sweetener, a sugar that forms fructose during digestion.

NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contains 6% alcohol by volume. NeoCitran Hustensolver Syrup is not suitable for children and adolescents under the age of 18.

When is caution required when using NeoCitran Hustensolver?

Consult a doctor if

  • breathlessness occurs,
  • the cough is accompanied by bloody sputum or excessive mucus secretion,
  • the cough is persistent or chronic, e.g .if you smoke, have asthma, have chronic bronchitis or emphysema (overinflation of the air sacs in your lungs).
  • If the cough persists for more than 7 days, gets worse, comes back or is accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache, you should stop using NeoCitran cough suppressant and seek medical advice. A persistent cough can be a sign of a serious illness.

Caution is required if you have gastrointestinal diseases, impaired kidney function or if you suffer from a particular type of muscle weakness (so-called myasthenia gravis).

If hypersensitivity reactions occur (see under: «What side effects can NeoCitran cough reliever have?»), you must stop the treatment immediately and consult a doctor as soon as possible .

You should refrain from taking medicines at the same time that reduce or eliminate the urge to cough (so-called antitussives), as this can lead to an unwanted congestion of the bronchial mucus liquefied by NeoCitran cough reliever, with the risk of bronchial spasm and pneumonia.

When taking certain sedatives or certain muscle-relaxing agents (muscle relaxants) at the same time, their Effect can be enhanced by guaifenesin.
