Description

Maltofer Fol chewable tablets are a combination preparation containing iron and folic acid. They are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency with increased folic acid requirements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Iron is an indispensable component of the red blood pigment, the red muscle pigment and the iron-containing enzymes. Folic acid is an important vitamin for the development of the unborn child. A lack of folic acid in the first few weeks of pregnancy can lead to birth defects in the child.

What are Maltofer Fol chewable tablets and when are they used?

Maltofer Fol chewable tablets are a combination preparation containing iron and folic acid. They are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency with increased folic acid requirements during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Iron is an indispensable component of the red blood pigment, the red muscle pigment and the iron-containing enzymes. Folic acid is an important vitamin for the development of the unborn child. A lack of folic acid in the first few weeks of pregnancy can lead to birth defects in the child.

What should be considered?

Before you start taking Maltofer Fol chewable tablets, your doctor or have been clarified by the doctor through suitable examinations. If the symptoms are not related to iron deficiency, Maltofer Fol chewable tablets are not effective.

Your doctor would like to see the progress of your treatment through regular check-ups and may also want to carry out blood tests. This is normal and should not concern you. If your symptoms do not improve within 3 weeks, consult your doctor.

During treatment with Maltofer, the stool may turn dark, but this is harmless.

When should Maltofer Fol chewable tablets not be taken/used?

  • In the case of known hypersensitivity (allergy) or intolerance to the active ingredients iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex and folic acid or one of the excipients (see "What does Maltofer Fol chewable tablets contain?")
  • In the event of excess iron in the body (e.g. due to rare iron storage diseases which lead to iron deposits in the tissues)
  • In the case of so-called iron utilization disorders (e.g. if the anemia is due to insufficient utilization of iron)
  • In the case of anemia that is not due to an iron deficiency (e.g. due to increased hemoglobin degradation or lack of vitamin B12).

When is caution required when taking / using Maltofer Fol chewable tablets?

Inform yourself before taking Maltofer Fol your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you have:

  • An infection or tumor.
  • A deficiency of vitamin B12. The folic acid contained in Maltofer Fol can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you are being treated with any of the following medicines become:

  • Injectable iron supplements. Such iron preparations should not be used at the same time as Maltofer Fol.
  • Drugs used to treat epilepsy, especially phenytoin.
  • Chloramphenicol, a drug used to treat bacterial infections. Your doctor will monitor you carefully if you are taking both medicines.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you have received a blood transfusion because then there is a risk of iron overload with additional iron supplementation.

This medicine contains 10 mg sodium (main component of cooking/table salt) per tablet. This is equivalent to 0.5% of the recommended maximum daily dietary intake of sodium for an adult.

No relevant studies have been conducted. However, it is unlikely that Maltofer Fol has any effect on the ability to drive and use machines.

  • Have allergies
  • Take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!).

May Maltofer Fol chewable tablets be taken / used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, want to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, you may only use Maltofer Fol after Consult your doctor.

How do you use Maltofer Fol chewable tablets?

Maltofer Fol chewable tablets can be chewed or swallowed whole and should be taken during or immediately after a meal. Maltofer Fol chewable tablets have a break line on one side. This is only to break the pills for easier swallowing, not to split the pills into two equal doses. The daily dose can be divided into single doses or taken all at once.

For the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency without anemia and to cover an increased folic acid requirement:

1 chewable tablet daily.

For the treatment of iron deficiency with anemia and to cover an increased folic acid requirement:

2-3 tablets daily.

Once blood test values ​​for hemoglobin return to normal, treatment is continued with 1 chewable tablet daily until the end of pregnancy to meet increased iron requirements and to replenish iron stores.

Maltofer Fol chewable tablets are not suitable for children aged 12 years or younger.

The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the extent of the iron deficiency. The doctor decides on the exact duration of treatment in each case.

If you have taken more Maltofer Fol than you should, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. Too high a dose of folic acid could cause mood disorders, changes in sleep patterns, irritability and hyperactivity, nausea, abdominal distension and flatulence.

If you forget to take Maltofer Fol, simply take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Follow the dosage given in this leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Maltofer Fol chewable tablets have?

The following side effects can occur when taking Maltofer Fol chewable tablets:

Very common (affects more than 1 user in 10): A very common side effect is discolored stool due to iron excretion, but this is harmless.

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100): Commonly observed side effects are nausea, constipation, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Uncommon (affects 1 to 10 users in 1000): uncommon: vomiting, discoloration of the teeth, inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), itching, rash, hives, reddening of the skin (erythema) and headaches come.

Rare (affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000): in rare cases, patients experience muscle spasms and muscle pain (myalgia).

These side effects are usually temporary.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.
