What is elmex jelly and when is it used?

elmex® gelée is a concentrate for local fluoridation of tooth enamel and to increase caries resistance. elmex® jelly contains caries-inhibiting amine fluoride. It is to be used externally on the tooth surface. It is not used daily, but at weekly intervals.

elmex® gelée is suitable for caries prophylaxis with high caries activity, with sensitive tooth necks and enamel decalcification under removable splints, partial dentures and orthodontic appliances.

When should elmex gelée not be used?

•In the event of hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients.

•For detachment of the oral mucosa.

•For bone and/or dental fluorosis.

•For people in whom control of the swallowing reflex is not guaranteed (e.g. children under 6 years of age).

When is caution required when taking / using elmex gelée?

To avoid poisoning through swallowing, elmex®< /sup> jelly should not be used if the swallowing reflex cannot be controlled.

In children under 8 years of age, use should be supervised by parents.

Because of the peppermint flavor and spearmint oil content, patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases should consult their doctor/dentist before using elmex® jelly.

After the application of elmex® gelée, systemic fluoride intake (e.g. through fluoride tablets) should be suspended for a few days.

Incompatibilities exist with surfactants (soap solutions) and all soluble calcium, magnesium and aluminum salts.

The immediate intake of calcium, magnesium (e.g. milk) and aluminum (medicines for the treatment of stomach problems; antacids) after treatment with elmex® jelly can impair the effect of the fluorides.

Inform your doctor, dentist, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or are taking other medicines (even those you bought yourself!) or using them externally!

Can elmex jelly be taken/used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Systematic scientific studies on the use of elmex® jelly during pregnancy were not performed.

As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding or ask your doctor, dentist, pharmacist or druggist for advice.

How do you use elmex gelée?

Unless otherwise prescribed, in home dental care:

Brush your teeth thoroughly with 1 cm of elmex® jelly once a week. Rinse after 2 to 3 minutes. The total application time (cleaning and exposure time) must not exceed 5 minutes.

Follow the dosage given in the package leaflet or prescribed by your doctor or dentist. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can elmex gelée have?

Like all medicines, elmex® gelée can have side effects don't have to happen to everyone.

The following side effects can occur very rarely when using elmex® jelly:

•Detachment of the oral mucosa (desquamative changes).

•Inflammation of the oral mucosa (stomatitis), redness, burning or itching in the mouth, numbness, swelling, edema, taste disorders, dry mouth, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis).

•Superficial defects (erosions) or ulcers or blisters on the oral mucosa.

•Nausea or vomiting.

•Hypersensitivity reactions.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

What else needs to be considered?

Durability

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.

Use by after opening

Once the container has been opened, the medicinal product can be kept for 20 months up to the expiry date at the latest.

Storage Instructions

Do not store above 25°C.

elmex® gelée should be kept out of the reach of children.
