What is Peru-Stick and when is it used ?

Peru-Stick is a balm stick that should be rubbed into the areas to be treated in the event of skin tears, abrasions, slight cuts or chilblains. It is believed that Peru stick forms a protective film and can thus relieve the accompanying pain.

What should be considered?

If a local deterioration occurs or if healing does not take place within 2-3 weeks, a doctor should be consulted.

When should Peru-Stick not be used?

Peru-Stick should not be used if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

Peru-Stick must not be used on skin tears or cracks in the mammary glands while breastfeeding (see under «Can Peru-Stick be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?»).

Peru-Stick should not be used in children under 12 years of age.

When is caution required when using Peru Stick?

Peru-Stick is only intended for external use on the skin.

Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes. Do not use on large areas (10% of the body surface) or over a long period of time. There is a risk of developing an allergy to Balsam of Peru, so long-term use on broken skin is not recommended. As a precautionary measure and to reduce this risk, it is advisable to only use the Peru Stick until the injured skin has healed (see under «What side effects can Peru Stick have?»).

This medicine also contains wool wax (lanolin). Wool wax can cause localized skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).

Do not ingest. In the event of accidental ingestion, a doctor must be consulted immediately.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

  • suffer from other diseases,
  • have allergies or
  • take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!

Can Peru-Stick be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy

Systematic scientific studies have not been carried out . There are also no controlled studies of use in pregnant women. Peru Stick must not be used during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding

It is not known whether the active ingredients are excreted in breast milk. As a precaution, use during breast-feeding is not recommended. Peru Stick must not be used on skin tears or cracks in the mammary glands.

How do you use Peru Stick?

Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, apply to the affected areas twice a day.

Because of the risk of developing an allergy to Peru balsam, long-term use on broken skin is not recommended (see «What side effects can Peru stick have?»).

The use and safety in children under 12 years of age has not yet been tested.

Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Peru Stick have?

The following side effects can occur when using Peru Stick:

In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions and local skin reactions that manifest as itching, burning or redness. In this case, the application should be discontinued and a doctor consulted if necessary.

In rare cases, especially with long-term use, an allergy to balsam of Peru may develop, which makes it necessary to discontinue the preparation.

Symptoms of an overdose after accidental or intentional ingestion or extensive or prolonged use of Peru-Stick can include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and disorders of the central nervous system.

If you notice side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What else needs to be considered?

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container. Store medicines out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature (15-25°C).

What is in Peru Stick?

1g Peru Stick contains:

Active ingredients: Lidocaine 12.17 mg, Peru balsam 4.86 mg, dextrocamphor 4.86 mg, native castor oil 4.86 mg.

Excipients: yellow wax, thin paraffin, hard paraffin, wool wax (lanolin), white vaseline, wool wax alcohols, geranium oil, hard fat.
