NeoCitran cough suppressant relieves coughs and dry coughs associated with colds. On prescription, NeoCitran cough suppressant can also be used to treat acute coughing attacks of various origins.
The syrup can be used for children from 3 years of age, the depot tablets for adolescents from 12 years of age.
Smoking makes coughing worse. You can support the effect of NeoCitran cough suppressant by not smoking.
The syrup is sweetened with saccharin and sorbitol and can therefore also be taken by diabetics. One depot tablet contains 93 mg of lactose and its use by diabetics can be considered safe.
You must not use NeoCitran cough suppressant in the following cases:
If there is no improvement within 7 days or if symptoms worsen and/or are accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache, a doctor must be consulted.
If your child's cough or cough is productive, that is, if it is associated with a lot of mucus production, you should consult your doctor before using NeoCitran Cough Suppressant.
The inhibition of the cough reflex by NeoCitran cough suppressant promotes a build-up of secretions in the bronchi, which increases the risk of a respiratory infection (eg pneumonia) and can also lead to a dangerous spasm of the bronchi (bronchospasm). You should therefore refrain from taking cough suppressants that liquefy bronchial secretions (expectorants and mucolytics) at the same time as NeoCitran cough suppressant.
Sorbitol: NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contains sorbitol (284 mg/ml). Sorbitol is a source of fructose (see "When should NeoCitran cough suppressant not be taken?"). Talk to your doctor before you (or your child) take NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup if your doctor has told you that you (or your child) have an intolerance to some sugars. Sorbitol can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and can have a mild laxative effect.
Ethanol : NeoCitran Cough Suppressant Syrup contains small amounts of alcohol (11.73 mg/5 ml).
Lactose : NeoCitran cough suppressant depot tablets contain lactose (see “When should NeoCitran cough suppressant not be taken”)
Sodium: NeoCitran Cough Suppressant Syrup contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per dose, that is, it is essentially “sodium-free”.
