Femannose® N
Melisana AGMedical device
What is Femannose N and when is it used?
Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) and related diseases are microbial diseases that primarily affect the bladder and urethra. In most cases, they are triggered by the invasion of non-pathogenic bacteria from the microflora of the lower gastrointestinal tract when these bacteria find conditions that allow them to adhere and grow on the bladder wall and urinary tract. These conditions are most common in young women, during pregnancy, and during the peri- and post-menopause, but sometimes in older men or in catheterized patients. The drug therapy of choice for cystitis is currently the administration of antibiotics. However, many bacteria are resistant and can lead to recurrence of the infection. Femannose N is a medical device indicated for the treatment and prevention of cystitis and other uncomplicated lower bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs). D-Mannose can relieve the most common symptoms of lower urinary tract infections (burning urination, frequent urination, urinary urgency, etc.) when they are caused by bacteria of the Escherichia coli type. D-Mannose is an epimer of glucose that effectively prevents the attachment of pathogens to the epithelium of the urinary tract, thereby preventing the attachment of microbes invading the urogenital tract. This reduces its virulence, or ability to attach to urinary tract tissue, and helps to 'physically' prevent infections from reoccurring. Femannose N for the prevention or treatment of cystitis and other uncomplicated bacterial lower urinary tract infections can have a synergistic effect with antibiotics because the antimicrobial mode of action is different and does not overlap. In particular, Femannose N and its components do not contribute to the development of resistance. Femannose N is not a substitute for antibiotic treatment of urinary tract infections.
