Dry eye (medical term: keratoconjunctivitis sicca) is a multifactorial, chronic and inflammatory disease of the tear film and the surface of the eye. The term is used to summarize symptoms caused by reduced tear production, an unstable tear film, or an altered composition of the tear film. Function and structure of the tear film The tear film is important for various functions of our eyes: moisturizing the surface of the eye and the inner surface of the lids, supplying the cornea with nutrients, oxygen and vitamins, protection against foreign bodies (e.g. dust) and defense against infectious agents The tear film consists of three components that are constantly mixed by blinking, respectively be rebuilt. Impairment of one of the three components of the tear film triggers dry eye symptoms. Dry Eye: Causes & Symptoms The causes of dry eyes are varied and not always clear.
