Metamucil N Mite is a herbal stool regulator made from Plantaginis ovatae seed husks. Metamucil N Mite swells when it absorbs water and thus increases the volume of stool in the intestine. This naturally stimulates intestinal activity. Metamucil N Mite also gives the intestinal contents a soft and supple texture. This also promotes and facilitates excretion. Metamucil N Mite is suitable for stool regulation in cases of constipation, in cases of a tendency to constipation, to facilitate bowel movements in cases of hemorrhoids and after surgical interventions, during pregnancy and the postpartum period, in cases of bedridden patients and during convalescence.
If Metamucil N Mite is taken half an hour before meals, appetite will be reduced.
If you suffer from constipation, you should eat foods rich in fiber (vegetables, fruit, whole grain bread), drink plenty of fluids regularly, and exercise.
Metamucil N Mite must not be used in case of hypersensitivity to Indian psyllium husks or psyllium husk powder or to other ingredients (see also “What does Metamucil N Mite contain?” and “How do you use Metamucil N Mite?”).
Metamucil N Mite must not be used by children under 6 years of age. Metamucil N Mite must not be taken in the case of a hiatal hernia, narrowing of the esophagus, changes in bowel habits lasting longer than 2 weeks, intestinal obstruction (ileus), intestinal narrowing (stenosis), intestinal paralysis (paralysis), excessive stool hardening (fecal stones) and abdominal pain of unknown cause.
Metamucil N Mite must not be taken in case of unexplained bleeding from the intestines or if no laxative effect has occurred repeatedly after taking the medication.
In case of chronic constipation, it is advisable to consult a doctor. If the powder is inhaled repeatedly, Metamucil N Mite can, in rare cases, cause allergic reactions, including respiratory reactions, in sensitive people.
Medical staff or nursing staff who have prepared products containing psyllium husk powder for patients to take over a long period of time may have become sensitized to these products - especially if they are allergic - due to the prolonged inhalation of powder and may react allergically in the future. If allergic symptoms occur (listed under "What side effects can Metamucil N Mite have?"), the product must not be used or prepared any further with immediate effect.
Patients who are hypersensitive to azo dyes, acetylsalicylic acid, rheumatism medication and painkillers (prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors) should not use Metamucil N Mite.
Metamucil N Mite should only be taken by diabetics under medical supervision, as blood sugar levels may change (see also “What does Metamucil N Mite contain?”). Patients who are also receiving thyroid hormone therapy should only take Metamucil N Mite under medical supervision.
The absorption of medicines taken at the same time, e.g. digitalis preparations, blood thinning preparations, those for seizure disorders or depression as well as minerals or vitamins can be impaired by simultaneous intake with Metamucil N Mite, which is why an interval of at least 1 hour between intake is required.
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you:
•suffer from other diseases
•Have allergies or
•take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or apply them externally.
If necessary, Metamucil N Mite may also be taken during pregnancy and while breastfeeding if a change in diet has not been successful.
As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or ask your doctor, pharmacist (or druggist) for advice.
Adults: 1 heaped teaspoon (approx. 5.8 g) (children over 6 years: 1/2 teaspoon), or 1 sachet of 5.8 g (children over 6 years: 1/2 sachet), 1-3 times daily before or after meals and with plenty of liquid. For each dose, fill a large glass with cold water, add the powder, stir and drink immediately. It is possible to use fruit juice, other table drinks or milk. Whenever possible, a second glass of liquid should be drunk afterward.
Follow the dosage instructions provided in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor.
If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
When preparing the product for ingestion, it is important to avoid inhaling the powder to minimize the risk of developing an allergy to the ingredients.
The following side effects may occur when taking Metamucil N Mite:
Occasional flatulence and a feeling of fullness, particularly at the beginning of treatment. The swelling can cause the abdomen to swell and the esophagus to narrow or cause constipation, particularly if the fluid intake is too low.
In isolated cases, the occurrence of other symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort or pain has been reported.
Psyllium husks contain allergenic substances. Allergic reactions can occur when the product is ingested, when it comes into contact with the skin or when the powder is inhaled.
The allergic reaction manifests itself, for example, in a runny nose, reddening of the conjunctiva, difficulty breathing (bronchospasm), skin reactions, itching and in some cases in the form of anaphylaxis (a sudden, generalized allergic reaction that can lead to life-threatening shock). People who routinely prepare powder formulations (e.g. as caregivers) are at increased risk of these reactions due to frequent contact with the powder (see also "When should Metamucil N Mite not be used or should it only be used with caution?" ).
If you notice any side effects not listed here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
If other medicines are administered at the same time, absorption may be delayed. Therefore, an interval of half an hour to one hour should be observed before using Metamucil N Mite after taking other medicines.
It is extremely important to drink enough fluids to restore the hardened stool to a normal level of moisture.
If you have difficulty swallowing, the product should only be used after consulting your doctor.
Taking it shortly before going to bed is not advisable.
This product contains aspartame. People with phenylketonuria should take this into consideration.
If your symptoms persist, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
This medicine should only be used until the date stated on the container with "EXP". Store at room temperature (15-25°C) in a dry place; keep out of the reach of children.

Pflanzliches Arzneimittel
Metamucil N Mite ist ein pflanzliches Stuhlregulans, welches aus Plantaginis ovatae-Samenschalen hergestellt wird. Metamucil N Mite quillt bei Wasseraufnahme und vergrössert so im Darm das Stuhlvolumen. Dadurch wird die Darmtätigkeit auf natürliche Weise angeregt. Ausserdem verleiht Metamucil N Mite dem Darminhalt eine weiche und geschmeidige Beschaffenheit. Dies fördert und erleichtert zusätzlich die Ausscheidung. Metamucil N Mite ist geeignet zur Stuhlregulierung bei Verstopfung, bei Neigung zu Verstopfung, zur Erleichterung des Stuhlgangs bei Hämorrhoiden und nach chirurgischen Eingriffen, während Schwangerschaft und Wochenbett, bei Bettlägerigkeit und in der Rekonvaleszenz.
Wird Metamucil N Mite eine halbe Stunde vor den Mahlzeiten eingenommen, so tritt eine Appetitverminderung ein.
Wenn Sie an Verstopfung leiden, sollten Sie ballaststoffreiche Nahrung (Gemüse, Früchte, Vollkornbrot) sowie viel und regelmässig Flüssigkeit zu sich nehmen und auf körperliche Betätigung (Sport) achten.

Metamucil N Mite non deve essere usato dai bambini sotto i 6 anni. Metamucil N Mite non deve essere assunto in caso di ernia iatale, in caso di restringimento dell'esofago, di alterazioni dell'evacuazione che durano più di 2 settimane, in casi d'occlusione (ileo), restringimento dell'intestino (stenosi) o paralisi dell'intestino oppure di feci eccessivamente dure (coproliti), nonché in caso di dolori al ventre di origine ignota.
Metamucil N Mite non deve essere assunto in caso di sanguinamenti intestinali di origine sconosciuta e se con l'assunzione non è stato ottenuto, ripetutamente, alcun effetto lassativo.
In caso di stitichezza cronica è consigliabile consultare il medico. In seguito a ripetuta inspirazione della polvere, in rari casi il Metamucil N Mite può provocare, nelle persone con una tale predisposizione, delle reazioni allergiche, in particolare delle vie respiratorie.
I medici o gli operatori sanitari che preparano per i pazienti prodotti per uso orale contenenti polvere di cuticola di scorze di semi di plantaginis ovatae per periodi prolungati possono essere sensibilizzati a questi prodotti a causa dell'inalazione continua della polvere, in particolare se predisposti alle allergie, e sviluppare allergie in futuro. In caso di comparsa di sintomi di allergia (riportati alla voce «Quali effetti collaterali può avere il Metamucil N Mite?»), da quel momento il prodotto non deve più essere utilizzato né maneggiato.
I pazienti con reazione di ipersensibilità ai coloranti azoici, all'acido acetilsalicilico come pure ad altri antireumatici e analgesici (bloccanti della sintesi delle prostaglandine) non devono usare Metamucil N Mite.
I diabetici dovrebbero prendere Metamucil N Mite soltanto sotto controllo medico, perché i valori glicemici possono subire variazioni (vedi «Cosa contiene il Metamucil N mite?»).
I pazienti in trattamento con ormoni tiroidei devono assumere Metamucil N Mite solo sotto controllo medico.
L'assorbimento di medicamenti assunti contemporaneamente, tra cui preparati a base di digitale, anticoagulanti, medicamenti contro le crisi epilettiche o la depressione, sali minerali e vitamine, può essere compromesso in caso di assunzione contemporanea di Metamucil N Mite; per questo è necessario lasciar trascorrere un intervallo di almeno 1 ora.

Metamucil N Mite darf nicht angewendet werden bei Überempfindlichkeit gegenüber Indischen Flohsamenschalen oder Flohsamenschalen-Pulver sowie gegenüber anderen Inhaltsstoffen (siehe auch «Was ist in Metamucil N Mite enthalten?» und «Wie verwenden Sie Metamucil N Mite?»).
Metamucil N Mite darf nicht von Kindern unter 6 Jahren angewendet werden. Metamucil N Mite darf nicht eingenommen werden bei Zwerchfellbruch (Hiatushernie), Verengung der Speiseröhre, veränderten Stuhlgewohnheiten, die länger als 2 Wochen anhalten, bei Darmverschluss (Ileus), Darmverengung (Stenose), Darmlähmung (Paralyse) übermässiger Stuhlverhärtung (Kotsteinen) sowie bei Bauchschmerzen unbekannter Ursache.
Metamucil N Mite darf nicht eingenommen werden bei nicht abgeklärten Blutungen aus dem Darm sowie dann, wenn nach der Einnahme wiederholt keine abführende Wirkung eingetreten ist.
Bei chronischer Verstopfung empfiehlt es sich, den Arzt bzw. die Ärztin aufzusuchen. Bei wiederholtem Einatmen des Pulvers kann Metamucil N Mite in seltenen Fällen bei dafür empfindlichen Personen allergische Reaktionen, unter anderem der Atemwege, hervorrufen.
Angehörige des medizinischen Personals oder Pflegepersonals, die über einen längeren Zeitraum Produkte mit Flohsamenschalenpulver für Patienten zur Einnahme vorbereitet haben, können auf diese Produkte – insbesondere dann, wenn sie allergisch veranlagt sind - aufgrund des anhaltenden Einatmens von Pulver sensibilisiert worden sein und zukünftig allergisch reagieren. Bei Auftreten von allergischen Symptomen (unter «Welche Nebenwirkungen kann Metamucil N Mite haben?» aufgeführt), darf das Produkt ab sofort nicht weiter verwendet oder zubereitet werden.
Patientinnen und Patienten, die auf Azofarbstoffe, Acetylsalicylsäure sowie Rheuma- und Schmerzmittel (Prostaglandinsynthesehemmer) überempfindlich reagieren, sollen Metamucil N Mite nicht anwenden.
Metamucil N Mite sollte von Diabetikern nur unter ärztlicher Kontrolle eingenommen werden, weil sich eventuell die Blutzuckerwerte verändern (siehe auch «Was ist in Metamucil N Mite enthalten?»). Patienten mit gleichzeitiger Schilddrüsenhormontherapie sollten Metamucil N Mite nur unter ärztliche Kontrolle einnehmen.
Die Aufnahme von gleichzeitig eingenommenen Arzneimitteln, z.B Digitalispräparate, Präparate zur Blutverdünnung, solche gegen Anfallsleiden oder Depressionen sowie Mineralstoffe oder Vitamine kann durch die gleichzeitige Einnahme mit Metamucil N Mite beeinträchtigt werden, weshalb ein mindestens 1 stündiger Abstand bei der Einnahme erforderlich ist.
Informieren Sie Ihren Arzt, Apotheker oder Drogisten bzw. Ihre Ärztin, Apothekerin oder Drogistin, wenn Sie:
Falls erforderlich, darf Metamucil N Mite auch in der Schwangerschaft und während der Stillzeit eingenommen werden, wenn eine Ernährungsumstellung nicht erfolgreich war.
Vorsichtshalber sollten Sie während der Schwangerschaft und Stillzeit möglichst auf Arzneimittel verzichten oder den Arzt, Apotheker (oder Drogisten) bzw. die Ärztin, Apothekerin (oder Drogistin) um Rat fragen.
Erwachsene: 1 gehäufter Kaffeelöffel (ca. 5,8 g) (Kinder ab 6 Jahren: ½ Kaffeelöffel), oder 1 Beutel à 5.8 g (Kinder ab 6 Jahren: ½ Beutel), 1-3mal täglich vor oder nach den Mahlzeiten und mit reichlich Flüssigkeit einnehmen. Für jede Dosis ein grosses Glas mit kaltem Wasser füllen, Pulver beifügen, umrühren und sofort trinken. Es ist möglich, Fruchtsäfte, andere Tafelgetränke oder Milch zu verwenden. Wenn immer möglich, sollte ein zweites Glas Flüssigkeit nachgetrunken werden.
Halten Sie sich an die in der Packungsbeilage angegebene oder vom Arzt oder der Ärztin verschriebene Dosierung.
Wenn Sie glauben, das Arzneimittel wirke zu schwach oder zu stark, so sprechen Sie mit Ihrem Arzt, Apotheker oder Drogisten bzw. Ihrer Ärztin, Apothekerin oder Drogistin.
Wenn Sie das Produkt zur Einnahme vorbereiten, ist es wichtig, die Inhalation des Pulvers zu vermeiden, um das Risiko, eine Allergie auf die Inhaltsstoffe zu entwickeln, zu minimieren.
Folgende Nebenwirkungen können bei der Einnahme von Metamucil N Mite auftreten:
Gelegentliche Blähungen (Flatulenz) sowie Völlegefühl besonders zu Beginn der Behandlung. Es kann durch das Aufquellen zur Auftreibung des Bauches und zur Einengung der Speiseröhre oder zum Stuhlverhalten kommen, insbesondere bei zu geringer Flüssigkeitszufuhr.
In Einzelfällen ist über das Auftreten von anderen Symptomen wie Übelkeit, Durchfall und Unwohlsein oder Schmerzen im Bauchbereich berichtet worden.
Flohsamenschalen enthalten allergieauslösende Substanzen. Bei der Einnahme des Produktes, beim Kontakt mit der Haut oder bei der Inhalation des Pulvers, kann es zu allergischen Reaktionen kommen.
Die allergische Reaktion zeigt sich zum Beispiel in einer laufenden Nase, in einer Rötung der Augenbindehäute, durch Schwierigkeiten beim Atmen (Bronchospasmus), durch Hautreaktionen, Juckreiz und in manchen Fällen auch in Form einer Anaphylaxie (eine plötzliche, generalisierte allergische Reaktion, die zu lebensbedrohlichem Schock führen kann). Personen, die Pulverformulierungen routinemässig (z.B als Pflegende) vorbereiten, haben aufgrund des häufigen Kontakts mit dem Pulver ein erhöhtes Risiko für diese Reaktionen (siehe auch «Wann darf Metamucil N Mite nicht oder nur mit Vorsicht angewendet werden?»).
Wenn Sie Nebenwirkungen bemerken, die hier nicht beschrieben sind, sollten Sie Ihren Arzt, Apotheker oder Drogisten bzw. Ihre Ärztin, Apothekerin oder Drogistin informieren.
Bei gleichzeitiger Verabreichung von anderen Arzneimitteln kann eine verzögerte Aufnahme stattfinden. Deshalb sollte vor der Anwendung von Metamucil N Mite ein Abstand von einer halben bis einer Stunde nach der Einnahme von anderen Arzneimitteln eingehalten werden.
Die Einnahme von genügend Flüssigkeit ist ausserordentlich wichtig, um der verhärteten Stuhlmasse einen normalen Feuchtigkeitsgrad zu verleihen.
Wenn Schwierigkeiten beim Schlucken bestehen, sollte das Präparat nur nach Absprache mit dem Arzt bzw. der Ärztin angewendet werden.
Eine Einnahme kurz vor dem Schlafen-gehen ist nicht ratsam.
Dieses Produkt enthält Aspartam. Personen mit Phenylketonurie sollten dieses berücksichtigen.
Sollten Ihre Symptome anhalten, sprechen Sie mit Ihrem Arzt oder Apotheker bzw. Ihrer Ärztin oder Apothekerin.
