Description

What are Maltofer Fol chewable tablets and when are they used?

Maltofer Fol chewable tablets are a combination preparation containing iron and folic acid. They are used to treat and prevent iron deficiency with an increased need for folic acid during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Iron is an essential component of the red blood pigment, the red muscle pigment and the iron-containing enzymes. Folic acid is an important vitamin for the development of the unborn child. A lack of folic acid in the first few weeks of pregnancy can lead to birth defects in the child.

What should you watch out for?

Before you start taking Maltofer Fol chewable tablets, the blood's iron and blood pigment (haemoglobin) content should have been clarified by the doctor through suitable tests. If the symptoms are not caused by iron deficiency, Maltofer Fol Chewable Tablets are not effective.

Your doctor will want to check the progress of your treatment through regular examinations and may also carry out blood tests. This is normal and should not concern you. If your symptoms do not improve within 3 weeks, consult your doctor.

During treatment with Maltofer, the stool may become darkened, but this is harmless.

When should Maltofer Fol chewable tablets not be taken/used?

  • If you have a known hypersensitivity (allergy) or intolerance to the active ingredients iron(III) hydroxide polymaltose Complex and folic acid or one of the excipients (see "What does Maltofer Fol chewable tablets contain?")
  • In the case of excess iron in the body (e.g. due to rare iron storage diseases which lead to iron deposits in the tissues)
  • In the case of so-called iron utilization disorders (if the anemia is due, for example, to insufficient utilization of iron)
  • In the case of anemia that is not due to an iron deficiency (e.g. due to increased depletion of hemoglobin or lack of vitamin B12).
