What is Ferrum Hausmann and when is it used?Ferrum Hausmann capsules contain iron as an active ingredient (in the form of the salt iron(II) fumarate), which the organism needs to produce the blood pigment of the red blood cells.Ferrum Hausmann capsules are used to correct an iron deficiency in the body, which can occur, for example, during pregnancy, in the postpartum period, with frequent and heavy menstrual bleeding, with blood loss due to gastrointestinal diseases or after gastrointestinal operations, with disorders of iron absorption from food in old age or during the growth phases in children.Signs of iron deficiency include paleness due to low blood pigment (anemia), unusual tiredness, shortness of breath or decreased physical performance. What should be taken into account? Before you start taking Ferrum Hausmann capsules, your doctor should have confirmed that your blood levels of iron and blood pigment (hemoglobin) are too low through appropriate tests. If the "anemia" is not caused by iron deficiency, the preparation is not only ineffective, but can lead to iron overload.Your doctor will monitor the progress of your therapy using blood tests. If your symptoms do not improve within 3 weeks, consult your doctor. When should Ferrum Hausmann not be taken? If you suffer from iron storage disease, iron overload, iron utilization disorders (e.g. "anemia" due to impaired absorption of iron in the intestine), iron intolerance (e.g. severe inflammatory diseases of the stomach and intestines) or severe liver and kidney diseases, you must not take Ferrum Hausmann capsules. Your doctor knows what to do in such cases. Children under 6 years of age must not be treated with Ferrum Hausmann capsules, but only with a preparation that contains less iron. Your doctor knows which preparation is suitable for children under 6 years of age. When should caution be exercised when taking Ferrum Hausmann? If you have inflammatory stomach or intestinal diseases or other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, you should only take iron supplements with caution and after consulting your doctor. Taking the antibiotic tetracycline at the same time reduces the effect of Ferrum Hausmann capsules. For the same reason, the capsules should not be taken at the same time as foods and beverages containing tannins (black tea, coffee). If Ferrum Hausmann capsules and thyroid hormones must be taken, a dosing interval of at least 2 hours should be observed, otherwise the absorption of the thyroid hormone will be disrupted. Some medications for hyperacidity (if they contain calcium carbonate) or for high blood fats (cholestyramine) can reduce the effect of Ferrum Hausmann capsules by impairing the absorption of iron in the intestine. Therefore, several hours should elapse between taking the above-mentioned medications and an iron supplement.Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies, are taking other medicines (including those you have bought yourself!) or are using them externally!Chronic alcohol abuse can lead to iron overload by increasing iron absorption. Please only take Ferrum Hausmann capsules after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from sugar intolerance. This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per capsule, that is to say essentially “sodium-free”.Can Ferrum Hausmann be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?Based on experience to date, there is no known risk to the child when used as directed. However, systematic scientific studies have never been carried out. As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or ask your doctor, pharmacist or druggist for advice. How do you use Ferrum Hausmann?AdultUnless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, you should usually take 1 capsule per day, 10-15 minutes before breakfast with plenty of liquid. To reduce the occurrence of stomach problems in sensitive patients, the capsules can also be taken with food or after a meal, but this may reduce their effectiveness.Ferrum Hausmann capsules usually have to be taken over several weeks or months. The doctor decides on the exact duration of treatment in each individual case. Stick to the dosage stated in this leaflet or prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.children and adolescentsThe use and safety in children and adolescents has not yet been systematically tested. What side effects can Ferrum Hausmann have? The following side effects may occur when taking Ferrum Hausmann capsules:Abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and nausea (occasionally vomiting), heartburn, decreased appetite and skin reactions (e.g. redness, itching, rash). These side effects are usually harmless and temporary. If they persist and you find them unpleasant, contact your doctor.Since Ferrum Hausmann capsules contain iron, the stool may turn dark. This is usually caused by the fact that not all of the iron has been absorbed in the intestine and has no medical significance. In rare cases, however, black and sticky stools may occur together with other side effects, e.g. red streaks in the stool, cramps, abdominal and stomach pain. If you notice these side effects, contact your doctor immediately. If a large amount is accidentally ingested (e.g. by children), iron poisoning can occur. The first signs of this are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. In such cases, the doctor should be informed immediately. The doctor will decide on further measures. If you notice any side effects, please contact your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This applies in particular to side effects not listed in this leaflet. What else should be considered?Ferrum Hausmann capsules must be kept out of the reach of children. Even a small pack of 30 capsules contains a total dose of iron which can lead to life-threatening iron poisoning in small children if accidentally ingested. The medicine should be stored in a dry place at room temperature (15-25 °C). It may only be used until the date marked "EXP" on the container. If you have capsules that have expired, please return them to your pharmacy or drugstore for destruction. Your doctor, pharmacist or druggist will be able to provide you with further information.
