Ferrum Hausmann capsules contain iron as an active ingredient (in the form of the salt iron(II) fumarate), which the organism needs to produce the blood pigment in the red blood cells. Ferrum Hausmann Capsules are used to remedy an iron deficiency in the body, which occurs, for example, during pregnancy, childbirth, frequent and heavy menstrual bleeding, blood loss due to gastrointestinal diseases or after gastrointestinal operations, iron absorption disorders from food in old age or during growth phases in children. Signs of iron deficiency include paleness due to low levels of blood pigments (anaemia), unusual tiredness, shortness of breath or reduced physical performance. Swissmedic-approved patient informationFerrum Hausmann®Vifor (International) Inc.What is Ferrum Hausmann and when is it used? What should be considered? Before you start taking Ferrum Hausmann Capsules, your doctor should check that your blood contains too little iron and blood pigment (haemoglobin). or have been confirmed by the doctor through suitable examinations. If the "anaemia" is not caused by iron deficiency, the preparation is not only ineffective, it can also lead to iron overload. Your doctor will monitor the progress of the therapy with blood tests. If your symptoms do not improve within 3 weeks, see your doctor. When should Ferrum Hausmann not be taken? If you suffer from iron storage disease, iron overload, iron utilization disorders (e.g. "anemia" due to impaired absorption of iron in the intestine), iron intolerance (e.g. severe inflammatory diseases of the stomach and intestines) or severe liver and kidney diseases, you must not take Ferrum Hausmann capsules. Your doctor knows what to do in such cases. Children under the age of 6 must not be treated with Ferrum Hausmann capsules, but only with a preparation that contains less iron. Your doctor knows which preparation is suitable for children under the age of 6. When is caution required when taking Ferrum Hausmann? In the case of inflammatory stomach or intestinal diseases or other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, you should use iron preparations with caution and take after consultation with the doctor. Taking the antibiotic tetracycline at the same time reduces the effect of Ferrum Hausmann capsules. For the same reason, the capsules should not be taken at the same time as food and beverages containing tanning agents (black tea, coffee). If Ferrum Hausmann Capsules and thyroid hormones have to be taken, the dosing interval should be at least 2 hours apart, otherwise the absorption of the thyroid hormone will be disrupted. Some medicines against gastric hyperacidity (if they contain calcium carbonate) or against excessive blood lipids (cholestyramine) can reduce the effect of Ferrum Hausmann Capsules by impairing the absorption of iron in the intestine. There should therefore be a gap of several hours between taking the medicines mentioned above and an iron preparation. Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies, take other medicines (even those you bought yourself!), or use them externally! Chronic alcohol abuse can lead to iron overload by increasing iron intake. Please only take Ferrum Hausmann capsules after consulting your doctor if you know that you suffer from a sugar intolerance. This medicinal product contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per capsule, i.e. essentially 'sodium-free'. it is almost «sodium-free». Can Ferrum Hausmann be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?Based on previous experience, there is no known risk for the child when used as intended. However, systematic scientific investigations have never been carried out. As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding or ask your doctor, pharmacist or druggist for advice. How do you use Ferrum Hausmann?AdultsUnless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, it is customary 1 capsule per day, taken 10-15 minutes before breakfast with sufficient liquid. The capsules can also be taken with food or after a meal to reduce the incidence of stomach upset in sensitive patients, but this may reduce their effectiveness. Ferrum Hausmann capsules usually have to be taken for several weeks or months. The doctor decides on the exact duration of treatment in each individual case. Follow the dosage given in this leaflet or prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. Children and adolescentsThe use and safety in children and adolescents has not yet been systematically tested. What side effects can Ferrum Hausmann have? The following side effects can occur when taking Ferrum Hausmann capsules: Stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation and nausea (occasionally vomiting), burning sensation, decreased appetite and skin reactions (e.g. redness, itching, rash). These side effects are usually harmless and temporary. If they persist and you find them uncomfortable, contact your doctor. Since Ferrum Hausmann capsules contain iron, the stool can turn dark. This is usually due to not all the iron being absorbed in the gut and has no medical significance. However, in rare cases, black-colored and sticky stools can occur along with other side effects, e.g. red streaks in stool, cramps, abdominal and stomach pain. If you notice these side effects, contact your doctor or health care professional immediately. Inadvertently ingesting a large amount (e.g. in children) can lead to iron poisoning. The first signs of this are diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. In such cases, the doctor must be informed immediately. The doctor decides on further measures. If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet. What else needs to be considered?Ferrum Hausmann capsules must be kept out of the reach of children. Even a small pack of 30 capsules contains a total dose of iron which, if accidentally ingested by small children, can lead to life-threatening iron poisoning. The medicine should be stored in a dry place at room temperature (15-25°C). It may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container. If you have capsules that have expired, please return them to your pharmacy or drugstore to be destroyed. Your doctor, pharmacist or druggist can provide you with further information.
