What is NeoCitran Cough Suppressant and when is it used?NeoCitran cough suppressant relieves coughs and dry coughs associated with colds. On prescription, NeoCitran cough suppressant can also be used to treat acute coughing attacks of various origins.The syrup can be used for children from 3 years of age, the depot tablets for adolescents from 12 years of age.What should be taken into account?Smoking makes coughing worse. You can support the effect of NeoCitran cough suppressant by not smoking.The syrup is sweetened with saccharin and sorbitol and can therefore also be taken by diabetics. One depot tablet contains 93 mg of lactose and its use by diabetics can be considered safe.When should NeoCitran cough suppressant not be taken?You must not use NeoCitran cough suppressant in the following cases:if you are allergic to butamirate citrate (active ingredient) or any of the excipients.You should not take the syrup or give it to your child if you or your child suffer from fructose intolerance, a (rare) congenital condition in which the affected person cannot break down fructose. NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contains sorbitol, a sugar that forms fructose during digestion.NeoCitran cough suppressant depot tablets contain lactose. If you suffer from intolerance to certain sugars, you should not take NeoCitran cough suppressant depot tablets.Due to the high active ingredient content, the depot tablets are not suitable for children under 12 years of age.When should caution be exercised when taking NeoCitran cough suppressant?If there is no improvement within 7 days or if symptoms worsen and/or are accompanied by fever, rash or persistent headache, a doctor must be consulted.If your child's cough or cough is productive, that is, if it is associated with a lot of mucus production, you should consult your doctor before using NeoCitran Cough Suppressant.The inhibition of the cough reflex by NeoCitran cough suppressant promotes a build-up of secretions in the bronchi, which increases the risk of a respiratory infection (eg pneumonia) and can also lead to a dangerous spasm of the bronchi (bronchospasm). You should therefore refrain from taking cough suppressants that liquefy bronchial secretions (expectorants and mucolytics) at the same time as NeoCitran cough suppressant.Information on the excipientsSorbitol: NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup contains sorbitol (284 mg/ml). Sorbitol is a source of fructose (see "When should NeoCitran cough suppressant not be taken?"). Talk to your doctor before you (or your child) take NeoCitran cough suppressant syrup if your doctor has told you that you (or your child) have an intolerance to some sugars. Sorbitol can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and can have a mild laxative effect.Ethanol : NeoCitran Cough Suppressant Syrup contains small amounts of alcohol (11.73 mg/5 ml).Lactose : NeoCitran cough suppressant depot tablets contain lactose (see “When should NeoCitran cough suppressant not be taken”)Sodium: NeoCitran Cough Suppressant Syrup contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per dose, that is, it is essentially “sodium-free”.This medicine may impair your ability to react, drive and use tools or machines!While your child is taking NeoCitran cough suppressant, he or she should avoid cycling in traffic.Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if yousuffer from other diseases,have allergies oruse other medicines (including those purchased yourself!)Can NeoCitran cough suppressant be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?NeoCitran cough suppressant should not be used during pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor.As a precaution, NeoCitran cough suppressant should not be taken during breastfeeding.How do you use NeoCitran cough suppressant?Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor:syrup (from 3 years)Children from 3 to 6 years: 5 ml 3 times daily;from 6 to 12 years: 10 ml 3 times daily;Adolescents aged 12 to 18 years: 15 ml 3 times daily;Adults: 15 ml 4 times daily.Measure with the measuring cup provided. Rinse the measuring cup with water and dry it after use and before letting someone else use it.depot tabletsLeave an interval of at least 8 to 12 hours between individual doses. Swallow the depot tablets whole, do not chew.Adolescents aged 12 - 18 years: 1 tablet 1 to 2 times daily.Adults: 1 tablet 2 to 3 times daily.The syrup and the depot tablets should be taken before meals if possible.To relieve symptoms, the lowest effective dose should always be used for the shortest possible time.If a cough lasts longer than 7 days, you should consult a doctor.If you (or your child) take too much NeoCitran cough suppressant, tell your doctor immediately. An overdose of NeoCitran cough suppressant can cause the following symptoms: feeling agitated, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance and low blood pressure.Follow the dosage instructions in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor.
