Systane® LID WIPES

To supplement daily eyelid hygiene.

«Meibomian gland dysfunction», what does that mean?

Around 80% of people with dry eye suffer from meibomian gland dysfunction (MDD).1,2 In MDD, the function of the meibomian glands is impaired, which leads to a lack of lipids in the tear film and increased evaporation of the tear fluid leads. The result is a dry eye.

MDD can also occur in people with inflammation of the lid margin (medical term: blepharitis), since 75% of these patients also have altered meibomian glands.

Meibomian glands

There are around 70 meibomian glands on the inner edge of the eyelid, which produce an oily secretion (so-called lipid). Lipids are an important part of the tear film. It forms the outermost layer of the tear fluid (lipid layer) and thus prevents evaporation. Clogged meibomian glands lead to a reduced or incorrect composition of the lipid layer of the tear film.

Meibomian gland dysfunction: risk factors and symptoms

The following factors can favor the development of MDD: age, female gender, menopause, blepharitis (“inflammation of the eyelid margin”), eyeliner on the edge of the eyelid, medication e.g. hormone replacement therapy or contact lenses.

The typical symptoms of dry eyes as a result of MDD are: increased tear flow, feeling of dryness, itching, sensitivity to light, blurred vision.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Treatment

Lubricating drops with a lipid component provide symptom relief for dry eyes associated with meibomian gland dysfunction.

In addition, measures to care for the edge of the eyelid (warming up the glands with warm compresses, massage of the glands) and eyelid hygiene are advisable.
