Description

What Canesten is and what it is used for

Canesten cream/spray contain clotrimazole as an active ingredient. This active ingredient destroys fungi that attack the skin of humans and lead to superficial fungal diseases (mycoses). It is also effective against certain bacteria on the skin.

Canesten Cream can also be used for diaper rash and yeast infestation on the glans and penis.

When should Canesten not be used?

Canesten Cream/Spray should not be used if you are hypersensitive to other fungal agents (antimycotics) of the imidazole type or to a component of the preparation.

It is recommended for known hypersensitivity to cetylstearyl alcohol to use a cetylstearyl alcohol-free dosage form such as Canesten spray instead of the cream.

Canesten cream/spray must not be applied to the mucous membranes of the mouth or nose or in/on the eyes or swallowed.

When should caution be taken when using Canesten?

Consult a doctor if the fungus is widespread or the nails are also affected.

For the treatment of fungal infections in women special forms of Gyno-Canesten are available.

Canesten cream can reduce the tear strength and thus the safety of latex products such as condoms or diaphragms if applied to the intimate area (women: labia and surrounding skin areas; Males: glans and foreskin of the penis). This effect is temporary and limited to the period of treatment.

If you are taking tacrolimus at the same time, you should ask your doctor for advice before using Canesten cream on the glans or foreskin, as any tacrolimus overdose should be carefully monitored.

Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

  • suffer from other diseases ,
  • Have allergies or
  • take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!

Can Canesten be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Canesten must not be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.

As a precautionary measure, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, or consult a doctor, pharmacist or druggist or the Ask your doctor, pharmacist or druggist for advice.

How do you use Canesten?

Canesten Cream:

Adults and children from 2 years of age

Unless otherwise prescribed, Canesten Cream is applied thinly to the affected areas and rubbed in 2 to 3 times a day. When treating fungal diseases of the ear canal, a strip of gauze is coated with Canesten cream and placed in the ear canal as a loose tamponade, provided the eardrum is intact.

Canesten cream for diaper rash should be used 2 to 3 times a day with a thin application of the cream to the affected areas. Treatment should last at least 7 days. A doctor should then assess the success of the therapy and decide whether to continue the treatment.

Children under the age of 2

In children under the age of 2, Canesten Cream should only be used if prescribed by a doctor.

Canesten Spray:

Adults and adolescents from the age of 12

Canesten Spray is applied twice a day to the thinly sprayed on diseased areas by depressing the spray head twice. When treating large-scale fungal diseases, it is usually sufficient to press down the spray head 4 to 6 times. To prevent athlete's foot, Canesten Spray is used once a day. The spray can also be sprayed into stockings and shoes.

The safety and effectiveness of Canesten Spray in children under the age of 12 have not been tested.

The reliable and sufficiently long use of Canesten Creme/S is important for a successful treatmentpray (see below).

The duration of the treatment varies; it depends, among other things, on the extent and localization of the disease.

It is generally 3-4 weeks for skin fungus.

In the case of athlete's foot, treatment should be continued for about 2 weeks after all signs of the disease have disappeared - in order to prevent recurrence - even if there is rapid improvement.

To prevent the fungal disease from recurring, the affected parts of the body should be dried thoroughly after washing. This applies in particular to the spaces between the fingers and toes.

If the symptoms worsen or if there is no improvement after four weeks of treatment, the doctor should be consulted.

In the case of fungal infestation of the glans and foreskin, a treatment period of 1-2 weeks is generally sufficient.

What side effects can Canesten have?

The following side effects can occur when using Canesten cream/spray:

Hypersensitivity reactions and skin reactions such as dry skin, burning, blistering, swelling, stinging, reddening of the skin, irritation, itching, scaling, hives, shortness of breath, drop in blood pressure and even fainting can occur.
