What is Redoxon and when is it used?

Redoxon contains pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) as an active ingredient. Vitamin C intervenes in a variety of vital metabolic processes via various mechanisms.

It is used to treat and prevent vitamin C deficiencies such as scurvy and its precursors. The following diseases may increase the vitamin C requirement and/or supplementation may be necessary:

• Bleeding gums in the event of a vitamin C deficiency;
• Wound healing, for example after tooth extraction;
• Operations;
• Infectious diseases;
• Colds;
• Absorption disorders after surgical removal of the stomach (gastrectomy) or after diseases in the stomach /intestines;
• Smokers;
• Pregnancy and lactation;
• Treatment with antibiotics;
• for blood washing (hemodialysis).

What should be considered?

Since the body cannot produce vitamin C itself, it must be ingested with food. Vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamin C, especially citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and grapefruits. Larger amounts of vitamin C are also found in the liver and kidneys, but not in meat, cereals and dairy products. Cooking, watering, keeping warm and storing (including freezing) can greatly reduce the vitamin C content. Diabetics who determine the sugar in their urine themselves should not take Redoxon for a few days before the test because vitamin C affects the test result.

Chewable tablets are gentle on teeth and are also suitable for diabetics, as they contain no sugar (1 chewable tablet: 11 kJ = 2.6 kcal).

When should Redoxon not be used?

If you are allergic to one or more of the ingredients.

If you suffer from kidney stones with increased oxalic acid excretion, have an iron storage disease or if you suffer from severe kidney failure (including if you are on dialysis), you must not take Redoxon.

If you experience an allergic reaction during treatment with Redoxon, you must stop the preparation.

When should you be careful when taking Redoxon?

Redoxon is sweetened with aspartame. Patients with phenylketonuria should therefore only take the preparation after consulting their doctor.

If you suffer from (very rare) fructose intolerance, you must not take Redoxon Chewable Tablets because of the sorbitol they contain (fructose is produced during the metabolic breakdown of the sweetener sorbitol).

Medicines for contraception (oral contraceptives) and certain drugs used to treat allergies and inflammation (corticosteroids) lead to increased breakdown of vitamin C. Certain drugs that inhibit bone breakdown (calcitonin) increase vitamin C consumption. Salicylic acid derivatives (e.g. acetylsalicylic acid), certain antibiotics (tetracyclines) and certain drugs to treat epilepsy (barbiturates) reduce the availability of vitamin C in the body through reduced absorption or increased excretion. High doses of vitamin C can lower the concentrations of cyclosporine, indinavir, warfarin and disulfiram in the blood.

If vitamin C and antacids containing aluminum are taken at the same time, aluminum intake may increase. Particular caution is therefore required if you suffer from kidney failure.

Can Redoxon be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

How do you use Redoxon?

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor:

Adults and adolescents from the age of 12:

In the case of vitamin C deficiency and gastrointestinal diseases with absorption disorders (difficult absorption into the bloodstream), 500 mg (1st chewable tablet) up to 1 g (1 effervescent tablet or 2 chewable tablets) Redoxon taken.

To cover an increased need, 500 mg per day is usually sufficient.

In case of colds, 1 g is taken daily.

Chewable tablets: Suck or chew.

Effervescent tablets: 1 effervescent tablet is added to about 1.5 dl of water. As soon as it has completely dissolved, Redoxon is ready to drink.

Redoxon is not intended for use in children under the age of 12.

Follow the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Redoxon have?

Redoxon is well tolerated even in higher doses. The following side effects can occur when taking Redoxon:

Allergic reactions (e.g. rash, hives, edema, itching), asthma, shortness of breath, lung cramps and gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal and gastrointestinal pain) and reduced blood pressure can occur. After very high doses (4-5 g and more), slight diarrhea or increased urination is occasionally observed.

If you notice any side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What else needs to be considered?

The effervescent and chewable tablets should be stored tightly closed, at room temperature and protected from moisture (15-25 °C). .

The medicinal product should be kept out of the reach of children and may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.
