What is Buscopan and when is it used?

Buscopan has an antispasmodic and therefore pain-relieving effect on the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

Buscopan relieves the pain associated with spasms of the gastrointestinal tract and constipation with cramps.

When should Buscopan not be used?

Buscopan should not be used,

  • in the very rare diseases myasthenia gravis (muscle disease)
  • in megacolon (large bowel disease).
  • if there are mechanical narrowings in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. due to a tumor or a kinked bowel) or there is a suspicion of this,
  • if the bowel is blocked and not working properly (intestinal obstruction or paralysis leading to severe abdominal pain with no bowel movements and/or nausea/vomiting),
  • < li>If you are hypersensitive to scopolamine butyl bromide or any other ingredient in the drug.

One Buscopan dragée contains 41.2 mg sucrose. At the maximum recommended dosage, this corresponds to 411.8 mg of sucrose per day. If you suffer from fructose intolerance, you should not take this medicine.

When should you be careful when using Buscopan?

If severe abdominal pain persists, worsens or occurs with symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or blood in the stools, painful abdominal pain, low blood pressure or fainting, you should consult your doctor immediately to find out the cause of the pain.

< p>Patients with glaucoma, narrowing of the urinary tract, enlarged prostate or high heart rate (tachycardia) should seek advice from their doctor before using the product. Patients who are using other medicines, especially medicines for depression, asthma (beta-adrenergics), heart conditions, or patients who are taking antiallergic medicines (antihistamines) or metoclopramide (gastrointestinal preparation) should also consult their doctor beforehand.
