What is Buscopan and when is it used?

< p>Buscopan has an antispasmodic and thus pain-relieving effect on the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.

Buscopan relieves pain associated with spasms of the gastrointestinal tract and constipation with spasms.

When not to use Buscopan?

Do not use Buscopan,

  • in the very rare diseases myasthenia gravis (muscle disease)
  • in megacolon (large intestine disease).
  • if mechanical constrictions in the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. due to a tumor or a kinked bowel ) are present or suspected,
  • if the bowel is blocked and not working properly (intestinal obstruction or paralysis leading to severe abdominal pain with inability to have a bowel movement and/or nausea/vomiting),
  • If you are hypersensitive to scopolamine butyl bromide or any other ingredient in the drug.

One Buscopan dragée contains 41.2 mg sucrose. At the maximum recommended dosage, this corresponds to 411.8 mg of sucrose per day. If you suffer from fructose intolerance, you should not take this medicine.

When should caution be taken when using Buscopan?

If severe abdominal pain persists, worsens or is accompanied by symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, If you experience constipation or blood in your stool, painfully tense stomach, low blood pressure or fainting, you should contact your doctor immediately to clarify the cause of the pain.

Patients with glaucoma, narrowing of the urinary tract, enlarged prostate or high heart rate (tachycardia) should seek advice from their doctor before using the product. How do you use Buscopan?

Children under 6 years of age:

The use and safety of Buscopan dragées in children under 6 years of age not been investigated so far.

Adults and schoolchildren over 6 years of age:

1-2 tablets 3-5 times a day. The dragees should be swallowed whole with some liquid.

Suppositories (suppositories)

What side effects can Buscopan have?

The following side effects can occur when using Buscopan:

Occasionally, dry mouth and increased heart rate have been reported. These symptoms are usually mild and go away on their own.

Rarely, urinary retention has been observed.

Anaphylactic reactions and anaphylactic shock, shortness of breath, rash, erythema and hypersensitivity reactions may also occur.
