What is Octenisept colorless and when is it used?

Octenisept® colorless is a disinfectant for use on the skin and mucous membranes. It kills bacteria and fungi and is also effective against viruses.

Octenisept® colorless is used to disinfect the skin and mucous membranes in the case of minor injuries and wounds such as cuts, skin tears, abrasions or small-area light burns (1st degree burns). Octenisept® colorless is also used to disinfect the oral mucosa and before catheterization of the urethra. The application of Octenisept® colorless is painless.

What should be considered?

Large, heavily soiled and deep wounds as well as bite and puncture wounds require medical treatment (danger of tetanus). If the extent of a wound remains the same for some time or if the wound does not heal within 10 to 14 days, a doctor's visit is also necessary. The same applies if the edges of the wound are very red, the wound suddenly swells, is very painful or the injury is accompanied by fever (danger of blood poisoning).

When should Octenisept colorless not be used?

You must not use Octenisept® colorless if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Octenisept® colorless must not be used in the ear or on the eye. Do not use for flushing the abdominal cavity or urinary bladder.

When is caution required when using Octenisept colorless?

Tissue damage has been reported after irrigating deep wounds with a syringe. Therefore, Octenisept® colorless may only be applied superficially, i. applied with a swab or sprayed on.

Do not use Octenisept® colorless on or near skin areas that have been treated with disinfectants based on PVP-iodine. Strong brown to violet coloring can occur in the border area.

Use with caution and under medical supervision in preterm infants with extremely low birth weight (less than 1000g). Octenisept® colorless can cause severe skin damage in this age group.

Remove excess drug and ensure that the solution does not remain on the skin longer than necessary (including materials wetted with the solution that come into direct contact with the patient).

Avoid contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

There is limited experience of use in pregnant women. The drug should be used with caution during pregnancy. Since no experience is available for the first 3 months of pregnancy, Octenisept® colorless should not be used in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

There is insufficient experience with use during lactation. Since the active ingredient is not absorbed through the skin, or only in very small amounts, it can be assumed that it will not pass into breast milk. In order to avoid that the infant comes into contact with treated skin areas, Octenisept® colorless should not be applied to the breast while breastfeeding.
