What should be considered?

Note for diabetics

Alucol contains sorbitol and saccharin. Taking into account the calories, Alucol is suitable for diabetics. Alucol contains 0.4 g digestible carbohydrates per 5 ml gel or per chewable tablet. This corresponds to 0.04 bread units (BU) per 5 ml gel or per chewable tablet. 5 ml Alucol Gel correspond to approx. 1.7 kcal or 7 kJ; 1 Alucol chewable tablet corresponds to approx. 1.5 kcal or 6 kJ.

When should Alucol not be taken?

In the event of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to one of the excipients of the drug (according to «What does Alucol contain?»), as well as in the event of severe Disorders of kidney function (renal insufficiency) and in case of diarrhea Alucol must not be taken.

Alucol Gel contains 4.9% alcohol by volume. It must not be taken by children and young people.

When is caution required when taking Alucol?

Alucol must not be taken for longer than 2 weeks without consulting a doctor. In the case of prolonged and/or recurring symptoms, a doctor must examine whether a serious illness could be present. Alucol should also not be taken for long periods of time without medical supervision, because long-term use can lead to changes in blood salts, especially calcium and phosphate.

Taking Alucol at the same time as other medicines can reduce the absorption of many other medicines. Therefore, other medicines should always be taken 2 hours earlier or later than Alucol.

Alucol can influence the effect of some other medicines, e.g. antibiotics, cardiac glycosides, iron, painkillers and rheumatism medicines due to the aluminum hydroxide contained in Alucol if they are taken at the same time.

Alucol Gel contains 402.5 mg sorbitol per 1 scoop (5 ml) or 3220 mg sorbitol per 8 scoops of the maximum daily dose (40 ml).

Alucol chewable tablets contain 350 mg sorbitol per 1 chewable tablet or 2800 mg sorbitol per 8 chewable tablets of the maximum daily dose.

Sorbitol is a source of fructose. Talk to your doctor before you (or your child) take or receive this medicine if your doctor has told you that you (or your child) have an intolerance to some sugars or if you have Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI) - a rare congenital condition in which a person cannot break down fructose - has been identified.

Alucol contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per 5 ml gel or per 1 chewable tablet, i.e. essentially 'sodium-free'. it is almost «sodium-free».

Alucol Gel contains 188 mg alcohol (ethanol) per 5 ml (1 measuring spoon) corresponding to 4.9% by volume. The amount in 5 ml of this medicine is equivalent to about 5 ml of beer or about 2 ml of wine.

The amount of alcohol in Alucol Gel is unlikely to affect adults and adolescents, or be noticeable in children. In young children, effects may be possible, e.g. drowsiness.

The amount of alcohol in Alucol Gel can alter the effects of other medicines. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

If you are dependent on alcohol, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.

Alucol Gel contains methyl parahydroxybenzoate E 218 and propyl parahydroxybenzoate E 216, which can cause allergic reactions, including delayed reactions.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

▪suffer from other diseases,

▪ Have allergies or

•Take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!

Can Alucol be taken/used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

You must not take Alucol while pregnant or breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.

What side effects can Alucol have?

The drug can change the consistency of the stool (constipation, softening of the stool, diarrhoea). Occasionally belching and flatulence may occur.

If such symptoms occur at the recommended dose, the dose should be reduced.

Long-term use can lead to changes in blood salts, especially calcium and phosphate.

Long-term use can lead to increased aluminum blood levels in patients with impaired kidney function. The doctor must therefore regularly check the aluminum blood level in these patients.
