Description

Dequonal is a ready-to-use solution whose active ingredients are effective against certain pathogens found in the mouth and throat, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. Dequonal is therefore used for the local treatment of acute inflammatory diseases in the mouth and throat, such as blisters on the oral mucosa (aphthae), inflammation of the gums, oral mucosa and tongue.

Dequonal can also be used to help with sore throats and swallowing pains, tonsillitis and pharyngitis, as well as periodontal diseases, fungal diseases (thrush) and bleeding gums.

Dequonal is available in two dosage forms: the Dequonal gargle solution for mouth rinsing and gargling, and the Dequonal spray solution, which can be used to treat inflammations that are deeper in the throat.​

What is Dequonal and when is it used?

Dequonal is a ready-to-use solution whose active ingredients are effective against certain pathogens found in the mouth and throat, such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. Dequonal is therefore used for the local treatment of acute inflammatory diseases in the mouth and throat, such as blisters on the oral mucosa (aphthae), inflammation of the gums, oral mucosa and tongue.

Dequonal is available in two dosage forms: the Dequonal gargle solution for mouth rinsing and gargling, and the Dequonal spray solution, which can be used to treat inflammations that are deeper in the throat.​

When must Dequonal not be used?

Dequonal must not be used if there is a known hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients, in infants and small children under the age of 2 years (risk of laryngeal spasm due to levomenthol), in patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases associated with marked hypersensitivity of the airways.

Inhalation of Dequonal can cause shortness of breath or trigger an asthma attack due to the levomenthol content.

Dequonal should not be used on wounds.

When is caution required when using Dequonal?

Dequonal should only be used for gargling or rinsing if the patient has mastered the gargling technique. Therefore, use in children under the age of 6 is not suitable.

Patients with allergic contact allergies should not use Dequonal as sensitization is possible.

Avoid eye contact.

Severe tonsillitis and pharyngitis, e.g. angina, can be accompanied by fever. If the fever is higher or if there is no improvement within a week, a doctor should be consulted.

The medicinal product contains 6% alcohol by volume.

Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or use other medicines (including those you have bought yourself!). ​

Can Dequonal be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is insufficient data on the safety of use in pregnant women. Therefore, you should not use Dequonal during pregnancy unless directed by a doctor.

You should not use Dequonal if you are breast-feeding.

How do you use Dequonal?

Dequonal gargling solution

Adults: Morning, In the evening and after meals, gargle (for sore throat) or rinse (for diseases of the oral cavity) with undiluted Dequonal for about 20-30 seconds - 1 tablespoonful per application. ​

Dequonal spray solution

​Adults: Every 2 hours, or more frequently in severe cases, spray the Dequonal spray solution into the mouth and throat while holding your breath. 3-5 sprays per application. Press the spray valve down as far as it will go (pump!).

Dequonal should only be used for rinsing or gargling if the patient has mastered the gargling technique.

The use and safety of Dequonal in children and adolescents has not yet been tested. ​

Due to the risk of accidental ingestion, use in children under the age of 6 is not recommended.

Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. ​

What side effects can Dequonal have?

The following side effects can occur when using Dequonal:

Discoloration of teeth, tongue and prosthesis, taste disturbances, hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients, local allergic and non-allergic reactions (e.g. swelling, hives, irritation of the mucous membranes, itching, occasionally also with swelling of the pharyngeal mucosa and obstruction of the airways), anaphylactic reactions ( with accompanying symptoms), delay in wound healing when applied to wounds.

What else needs to be considered?

Keep Dequonal in the sealed original packaging in a place out of the reach of children.

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked “Use by” on the container.

Dequonal solution should be stored at room temperature (15-25°C). Protect from light.

What does Dequonal contain?

Dequonal contains 0.15 mg dequalinium chloride and 0.35 mg benzalkonium chloride as active ingredients per 1 g solution, flavorings and auxiliary substances.

Contains 6% alcohol by volume.

The Dequonal solution tastes sweet, like peppermint and fennel. The spray bottle contains no propellant.
