What is Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% and when is it used?

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% is a mouth and throat disinfectant.

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% is used for temporary supportive treatment for inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and after periodontal surgery.

What should be considered?

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% solution does not replace mechanical tooth cleaning, but can support it.

When must Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% not be used?

Chlorhexamed forte 0, 2% are not applied.

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% should not be used in the case of erosive-desquamative changes in the oral mucosa (superficially non-bleeding desquamation), wounds and ulcerations (ulcers).

When is caution required when using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%?

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% is only intended for use in the mouth and throat area and must not be swallowed.

Avoid contact with eyes or ear canal. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, the area around the eyes or the ear canal, flush with plenty of water.

If there is no improvement within 1 week, a doctor should be consulted. Longer use of more than 2 weeks should only take place after consultation with the doctor or dentist. Caution is required in the case of an existing periodontitis.

If pain, swelling or irritation of the mouth occurs, the use of Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% should be stopped immediately and a doctor consulted.

In very rare cases, chlorhexidine triggers allergies. Typical signs are itching, general reddening of the skin, hives, asthma or isolated circulatory reactions. Stop using Chlorhexamed immediately and contact your dentist or doctor immediately.

At the beginning of treatment with Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%, the sense of taste may be impaired, as well as a tingling or burning sensation on the tongue. These symptoms usually resolve with continued use. If these symptoms persist, you should consult a doctor.

With regular use, discoloration of the teeth and tongue can occur, which in most cases resolves. You can prevent this discolouration by reducing the consumption of staining foods or drinks such as black tea, coffee and red wine. You can prevent discoloration by brushing your teeth with regular toothpaste, but in some cases professional cleaning may be necessary to remove discoloration completely. Cleaning with a special cleaning agent is recommended for dentures.

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% is affected by anionic substances (surfactants), which are usually a component of common toothpastes. Therefore, do not brush your teeth at the same time, but at least 5 minutes before treatment with Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water before using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% (see «How do you use Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%?»).

Do not eat or drink any sugary foods or drinks immediately after using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%, as this would impair the effectiveness of Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%.

This medicinal product contains:
Macrogolglycerol hydroxystearate: may cause skin irritation.
Peppermint flavour: the ingredients citronellol, eugenol, limonene and linalool may cause allergic reactions.

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

  • suffer from other diseases,
  • have allergies or
  • use other medicines (including those you bought yourself!)!

Can Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During or before pregnancy, you should avoid taking medicines if possible.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should only use Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% after consulting your doctor.

How do you use Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%?

The solution is ready for use and must not be diluted.

The teeth should be cleaned with toothpaste at least 5 minutes before using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%. Then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water before using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%.

Adults and young people from the age of 12:

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, twice a day - preferably in the morning and evening after meals Rinse 10 ml (fill dispenser cap to the mark) in the mouth or gargle in the throat for 1 minute.

Then spit out the solution, do not swallow or rinse. Accidental swallowing of Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% is not harmful, but may cause nausea.

Do not use Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% for more than 2 weeks without medical or dental advice.

Inflammation of the gums (gingivitis):

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% should be used for 3 weeks in connection with mechanical cleaning processes. In special cases, e.g. in the case of disabled people, preventive treatment can also be carried out over a longer period of time.

Treatment after interventions on the periodontium (periodontal surgery):

Treatment with Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% should begin immediately after the first surgical intervention and last for 2 or 3 weeks be continued beyond the last intervention. The duration of treatment is therefore at least 2 and at most 10 weeks. In the case of upper and lower jaw fixation, Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% should be used as long as the fixation remains in the mouth (usually for 2-6 weeks).

In the case of inflammation of the oral mucosa caused by prostheses, clean the prosthesis first. Soak the denture in Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% solution for 15 minutes twice a day.

Children:

Children between the ages of 6 and 12 should only be used on the instructions of the dentist. The use and safety in children under 6 years of age has not yet been tested. Use in this age group is not recommended due to the risk of accidental ingestion.

Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% have?

Very common (affects more than 1 in 10 people): Coated tongue.

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100): dry mouth, temporary change in taste at the beginning of treatment, tingling, burning or numbness of the tongue. These symptoms may regress with continued use. If these symptoms persist, a doctor should be consulted.

Very rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 people treated): Hypersensitivity reactions (reddened, painful gums, allergic reactions of the skin, mucous membranes and respiratory organs), serious allergic reactions after topical application (see « When is caution required when using Chlorhexamed forte 0.2%?"), temporary scaly changes in the oral mucosa and temporary swelling of the salivary glands, temporary discoloration of the teeth, tooth fillings, dentures and the tongue papillae.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked on the container with « EXP» can be used.

Use by after opening

Chlorhexamed forte 0.2% can be kept for 6 months after opening.
