What is Sanalgin N and when is it used?

Sanalgin N contains the pain-relieving active ingredient paracetamol and caffeine.

Sanalgin N is used for the short-term treatment of headaches, toothache, pain in the area of joints and ligaments, back pain, pain during menstruation, pain after injuries (e.g. sports injuries), pain from colds.

What should be considered?

Sanalgin N should be used for a maximum of 5 days without a doctor's prescription.

Painkillers should not be taken regularly over a long period of time without medical supervision. Long-lasting pain requires a medical evaluation.

The dosage specified or prescribed by the doctor must not be exceeded. To prevent the risk of overdose, it should be ensured that other drugs taken at the same time do not contain paracetamol. It is also important to remember that long-term use of painkillers can itself contribute to headache persistence.

Long-term use of painkillers, especially when taking a combination of several painkillers, can lead to permanent kidney damage with the risk of kidney failure.

When must Sanalgin N not be taken/used?

You must not use Sanalgin N in the following cases:

  • If you are hypersensitive to the active ingredients paracetamol or caffeine or any of the excipients. Such hypersensitivity is expressed, for example, by asthma, shortness of breath, circulatory problems, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes or skin rashes (nettle fever).
  • In the case of severe liver diseases.
  • In the case of alcohol overconsumption.
  • If you have a hereditary liver disorder (so-called Meulengracht disease).

Sanalgin N must not be used in children and adolescents.

When is caution required when taking / using Sanalgin N?

If you have previously damaged kidneys or liver, you should consult your doctor before taking it.

If you have a rare hereditary disease of the red blood cells, the so-called "glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency" and if you are taking medicines that affect the liver, namely certain medicines for tuberculosis and seizure disorders (epilepsy) or medicines with the active ingredient zidovudine, which is used to treat immunodeficiency (AIDS), should only be taken in accordance with the doctor's strict instructions.

Inform your doctor if you need to take blood-thinning medication (e.g. Marcumar).

You should also consult your doctor if you suffer from pulse irregularities (cardiac arrhythmias).

The effects and side effects of certain asthma medications containing the active ingredients theophylline or aminophylline are increased. There may be restlessness or palpitations.

It is not advisable to take paracetamol and alcohol at the same time. The risk of liver damage increases, especially if you do not eat at the same time.

Individuals who are hypersensitive to pain or anti-rheumatic drugs may also be hypersensitive to paracetamol (see «What side effects can Sanalgin N have?»).

If you have a serious infection (e.g. blood poisoning), you should consult your doctor before taking.

Excessive consumption of caffeine in the form of coffee, tea or canned drinks containing caffeine should be avoided while taking Sanalgin N.

This medicinal product contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per dose, i.e. essentially 'sodium-free'. it is almost «sodium-free».

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you:

  • suffer from other diseases,
  • have allergies or
  • take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!)!

Can Sanalgin N be taken/used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

As a precautionary measure, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or consult a doctor, pharmacist or druggist , ask a pharmacist or druggist for advice. Based on previous experience, there is no known risk for the child with short-term use of the active substance Parcetamol in the specified dosage.

Although paracetamol occurs in breast milk, there are no known adverse effects on the infant. However, skin rashes can occur in breastfed infants.

During pregnancy, there is an increased risk of spontaneous abortion associated with caffeine consumption. Sanalgin N should therefore not be taken during pregnancy unless your doctor has given you express permission to do so. Caffeine could affect the infant's condition and behavior and should therefore be avoided during breastfeeding.

How do you use Sanalgin N?

The specified maximum daily dose must not be exceeded.

Adults take 1-2 tablets as needed.

The dose can be taken every 6 hours if needed. However, no more than 8 tablets should be taken in a 24-hour period.

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of liquid or allow them to disintegrate and then drink half a glass of liquid. The tablet must not be divided at the decorative groove.

Children and adolescents should not take Sanalgin N.

Overdose can cause very serious liver damage.

Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.

What side effects can Sanalgin N have?

The following side effects can occur when using Sanalgin N:

Rare (affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000)

In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions such as itching, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes or rashes, nausea, shortness of breath or asthma (especially if these side effects have also been observed previously with the use of acetylsalicylic acid and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs))

Very rare (affects less than 1 in 10,000 users)

Very rarely, serious skin reactions can also occur.

If signs of a hypersensitivity reaction, bruising or bleeding occur, the drug should be discontinued and the doctor consulted.

Changes in the blood picture, such as a reduced number of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) or a severe reduction in certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis) have also been observed.

Caffeine can cause insomnia, restlessness and heart palpitations, especially if caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea or cola are consumed at the same time.

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

What else needs to be considered?

The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.

Keep out of the reach of children!

In the event of uncontrolled intake (overdose), consult a doctor immediately. Overdose can cause very serious liver damage. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and a general feeling of illness can be an indication of an overdose, but only occur several hours to a day after ingestion.
