What is Lacdigest and when is it used?

Lacdigest is an enzyme preparation. It contains the enzyme tilactase, which is necessary for the breakdown of lactose (milk sugar). Eating lactose-containing foods such as milk, cheese, butter and yoghurt, as well as sauces, bouillon, ice cream and lactose-containing tablets can lead to flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The reason lies in a reduced activity of the body's own enzyme, which normally breaks down lactose in the intestine so that the breakdown products can be absorbed by the body. Lacdigest enables the breakdown of lactose in the gastrointestinal tract. This means that lactose-containing foods can also be digested by patients with lactose intolerance.

What should be considered?

Lacdigest is not effective if you are allergic to milk proteins.

When should Lacdigest not be used?

Lacdigest should not be used if there is a known allergy to tilactase, which is obtained from Aspergillus oryzae. Age limit for children see «How do you use Lacdigest?».

When should you be careful when taking Lacdigest?

If used as directed, no special precautions need to be followed. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or if you take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!

Can Lacdigest be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Lacdigest is only effective in the gastrointestinal tract. The enzyme is not absorbed into the blood. Based on previous experience, there is no known risk for the child when used as intended.

However, systematic scientific studies have never been carried out. As a precaution, you should avoid taking medicines during pregnancy and breastfeeding or ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How do you use Lacdigest?

The dosage depends on the severity of the symptoms that occur with lactose intolerance and on the amount of lactose ingested. Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the following guidelines apply:

Children from 3 years and adults: 1 chewable tablet per 5 g of lactose, corresponding to 1 chewable tablet per 1 dl of milk. If the symptoms are not reduced, the dose can be increased.

Maximum single dose: 6 chewable tablets per meal

Maximum daily dose: 12 chewable tablets per day

There is no experience with the use of Lacdigest in children under the age of 3 years. The chewable tablets must be chewed immediately before taking a lactose-containing meal.

They can also be swallowed. Follow the dosage given in the package leaflet or prescribed by your doctor. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

What side effects can Lacdigest have?

The following side effects can occur when taking Lacdigest: Allergic reactions in the event of hypersensitivity to the enzyme tilactase, which is obtained from the Aspergillus oryzae fungus.

In this case, Lacdigest should no longer be taken become. If you notice any side effects that are not described here, you should inform your doctor or pharmacist.

What else needs to be considered?

Lacdigest should be stored in a dry place at room temperature (15-25°C) and out of the reach of children. The medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked “EXP” on the container. If you have chewable tablets that have expired, please return them to your pharmacy for disposal. Your doctor or pharmacist can provide you with further information.
