Description

What is Acido-X and when is it used?

The active ingredient in Acido-X, pantoprazole, belongs to the class of proton pump inhibitors. It inhibits the enzyme responsible for releasing acid in the stomach (the proton pump).

Acido-X is used in adults for the short-term treatment of the symptoms of burning and acid reflux caused by stomach acid flowing back up the esophagus.

When should Acido-X not be taken?

Acido-X should not be used if there is a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient pantoprazole, other pro tone pump inhibitor or one of the excipients of Acido-X.

Acido-X must not be taken by children and adolescents. Acido-X should only be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding after consulting your doctor.

When is caution required when taking Acido-X?

Please inform your doctor immediately in the following situations:

  • unintentional, unexplainable weight loss,
  • unexplained pale appearance and feeling of weakness (anaemia),
  • if you have blood in your stools or if your stools are black in colour,
  • difficulty swallowing,
  • repeated vomiting,
  • vomiting blood,
  • stomach pain,
  • severe and/or persistent diarrhoea,
  • the appearance of a skin rash, especially in sun-exposed areas of the skin, as this may require you to stop treatment with Acido-X. Don't forget to mention other symptoms, such as joint pain.

Talk to your doctor before taking Acido-X if you have:

  • if you have had a stomach ulcer or an operation on your gastrointestinal tract,
  • if you have been taking a medicine for burning or acid reflux for 4 weeks or more continuously,
  • if you have jaundice or liver problems,
  • if you have any other co-existing serious medical condition,
  • if you are about to have an endoscopic examination (e.g. gastroscopy or breath test),
  • if you are older than 55 years and treat your digestive problems with non-prescription medicines on a daily basis,
  • if you are older than 55 years of age and have new or recently changed symptoms,
  • if you have ever had treatment with a medicine similar to Acido-X also reduces stomach acid, have noticed skin reactions.

Acido-X can affect the effectiveness of other medicines. Therefore, tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you are taking other medicines, such as:

  • medicines for fungal infections,
  • erlotinib for the treatment of certain types of cancer,
  • methotrexate for cancer,
  • medicines to thin the blood or medicines for HIV infections (e.g Atazanavir, ritonavir).

Concomitant use of these drugs should be avoided.

Do not take Acido-X with other drugs that reduce the amount of acid in the stomach, such as another proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole, lansoprazole or rabeprazole) or an H2 antagonist (e.g. ranitidine).

However, if necessary, you may take Acido-X with Antazi da (e.g. magaldrate, alginic acid, sodium bicarbonate, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium carbonate or combinations thereof).

If you experience side effects such as dizziness or blurred vision, you should not drive or operate machineryuse.

If you take Acido-X for more than 3 months, it is possible that the level of magnesium in your blood may drop. Low magnesium levels are manifested by fatigue, involuntary muscle tension, confusion, cramps, dizziness and increased heart rate. If you experience any of these side effects, please tell your doctor immediately. Low magnesium levels can also lead to a decrease in blood potassium and calcium levels. Your doctor may do regular blood tests to monitor your magnesium levels.

Taking proton pump inhibitors such as Acido-X, especially for more than a year, may slightly increase your risk of fractures in the hip, wrist, or spine. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or are taking corticosteroids (these medicines can increase the risk of osteoporosis).

Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist before starting treatment if you are going to have specific blood tests (chromogranin A).
