Triofan Schnupfen is a medicine to be used locally against a cold, which causes the nasal mucosa to decongest and reduces and liquefies mucous nasal discharge. This makes it possible to breathe through your nose again. Triofan Schnupfen is used to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa to make breathing easier when you have a cold.
On the advice of a doctor, pharmacist or druggist, Triofan cold can also be used for inflammation of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses as well as inflammation of the nasal passages caused by surgery. What is Triofan sniffles and when is it used?

When should Triofan cold not be used?
If you have had an operation on your skull, your doctor must decide whether you should use Triofan cold are allowed to use. This restriction also applies to all other vasoconstrictive preparations that are used in the nose.
Triofan cold must not be used on
- Hypersensitivity to the components,
- Dry nasal mucosa (rhinitis sicca),
- Narrow-angle glaucoma.
In children under 6 years of age neither the spray nor the drops should be used for adults.
When is caution required when using Triofan cold?
Triofan cold should not be used for longer than 5-7 days without medical advice. With prolonged use, a drug-related swelling of the nasal mucosa can occur, the symptoms of which are very similar to a cold.
Triofan Schnupfen should be used with caution in patients with hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus.
As with other cold remedies, temporary general side effects (such as sleep disorders and visual disturbances and dizziness) can also occur when using Triofan Schnupfen as a sign of increased sensitivity to one of the active ingredients.
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from heart disease (e.g. long QT syndrome). Patients suffering from long QT syndrome may experience severe cardiac arrhythmias when using Triofan Schnupfen.
This medicine contains benzalkonium chloride and benzyl alcohol.
- 1 drop for adults and older children and 1 drop for toddlers and infants contains 2.5 μg benzalkonium chloride and 75 μg benzyl alcohol.
- 1 puff for adults and older children contains 9 μg benzalkonium chloride and 270 μg benzyl alcohol.
- 1 puff for toddlers and infants contains 5 μg benzalkonium chloride and 150 μg Benzyl alcohol.
Benzalkonium chloride can cause irritation or swelling inside the nose, especially with prolonged use.
Benzyl alcohol may cause allergic reactions.
Inform your doctor, pharmacist or druggist, or your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or are taking other medicines (even those you bought yourself!) or use them externally.
Can Triofan cold be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Triofan cold should only be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding after consulting a doctor become.
How do you use Triofan Schnupfen?
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor:
Adults and children from 6 years of age: 3-4 times a day in each nostril 2-3 drops of adult and child nasal drops or 1 spray of adult and child nasal spray.
Children up to 6 years: 1-2 drops of the nasal drops for toddlers and infants or 1 spray of the nasal spray for toddlers and infants in each nostril 2-3 times a day.
Infants: 1 drop of Infant and Infant Nasal Drops or 1 spray of Infant and Infant Nasal Spray in each nostril 1-2 times daily.
Instructions for use of the microdosers (sprays)

Remove the protective cap. Before the first use, press the spray several times to activate the pump. The bottle is then ready for the following applications (a). During application (b), the vial should be held upright.
Insert the nozzle into the nostril and squeeze once. Before releasing the pressure, withdraw the spray.
Dispensing spray: Breathe in gently through your nose during application to ensure good distribution of the spray.
Dosing spray for small children and infants: Application when the child is sitting upright (avoid use when the child is lying down).
Put the protective cap back on after each use.
Stick to the dosage given in the package leaflet or as prescribed by your doctor. Please consult your doctor if you really have used too much. If you think the medicine is too weak or too strong, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist.
What side effects can Triofan cold have?
The following side effects can occur when using Triofan cold: itching or temporary sensation of burning in the nose or throat as well as local irritation and dryness of the nasal mucosa, occasionally nausea, headache, nosebleeds or allergic reactions (skin rashes, rare anaphylactic reactions).
If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or druggist. This also applies in particular to side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.

This medicinal product may only be used up to the date marked «EXP» on the container.
Storage instructions
Store Triofan Schnupfen at room temperature (15-25 °C) and out of the reach of children.

What does Triofan cold contain?
Active ingredients
Nasal drops for adults and children over 6 years of age contain 1 mg/ml xylometazoline hydrochloride and 10 mg/ml carbocisteine; 1 drop (= 0.025 ml) contains 25 μg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 250 μg carbocisteine.
The dosage spray for adults and children over 6 years contains 1 mg/ml xylometazoline hydrochloride and 10 mg/ml carbocisteine; 1 spray (= 0.09 ml) contains 90 μg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 900 μg carbocisteine.
Nasal drops for infants and children up to 6 years of age contain 0.5 mg/ml xylometazoline hydrochloride and 5 mg/ml carbocisteine; 1 drop (= 0.025 ml) contains 12.5 μg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 125 μg carbocisteine.
The dosage spray for infants and children up to 6 years contains 0.5 mg/ml xylometazoline hydrochloride and 5 mg/ml carbocisteine; 1 spray (= 0.05 ml) contains 25 μg xylometazoline hydrochloride and 250 μg carbocisteine.
