What is contra-pain plus and when is it used?

Contra-Pain plus contains the pain-relieving active ingredient acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine. Contra-Scherz plus is used for the short-term treatment of mild to moderately severe, acute pain (headache, toothache, pain in the area of joints and ligaments, back pain) and for the symptomatic treatment of fever and/or pain associated with colds.

Adolescents from the age of 12 only with a doctor's prescription and only as a second-line drug (see "When is caution required when taking Contra-Pain plus?").

What should be considered?

Contra-Pain plus should not be used for more than 5 days without a doctor's prescription or for more than 3 days in the case of fever . Painkillers should not be taken regularly over a long period of time without medical supervision. Long-lasting pain requires a medical evaluation. The dosage specified or prescribed by the doctor must not be exceeded. It is also important to remember that taking painkillers for a long time can itself contribute to headache persistence. Long-term use of painkillers, especially when several painkillers are combined, can lead to permanent kidney damage with the risk of kidney failure. Excessive consumption of caffeine in the form of coffee, tea and canned drinks containing caffeine should be avoided while taking Contra-Schalm plus.

When not to take Contra-Scherz plus?

You must not take Contra-Scherz plus if you:

  • are hypersensitive to the active substance acetylsalicylic acid or other salicylates. Such hypersensitivity is expressed, for example, by asthma, shortness of breath, circulatory problems, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes or skin rashes (urticaria);
  • are hypersensitive to xanthines (medicines for asthma);
  • are hypersensitive to one of the excipients (see «What is included in Contra-Pain plus?»);
  • have ever had asthma, hives or allergy-like symptoms in the past after taking acetylsalicylic acid or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (rheumatism drugs). have had;
  • suffer from a stomach and/or duodenal ulcer;
  • have blood in your stool or black stool or vomit blood (indication of gastrointestinal bleeding);
  • have a pathologically increased tendency to bleed;
  • suffer from severe heart, liver or kidney disease;
  • take more than 15 mg methotrexate per week at the same time;
  • suffer from a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis);
  • are in the last three months of pregnancy (see "Can Contra-Scherz plus be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding ?»).

Contra-Pain plus must not be used to treat pain after coronary bypass surgery on the heart (or use of a heart-lung machine).

Contra-Schmerz plus must not be used in children under the age of 12.

When is caution required when taking Contra-Pain plus?

During treatment with Contra-Pain plus, mucosal ulcers in the upper gastrointestinal tract, rarely bleeding or in individual cases perforations (gastrointestinal breakthroughs) occur. These complications can occur at any time during treatment, even without warning symptoms. To reduce this risk, the smallest effective dose should be used over the shortest possible duration of therapy. Contact your doctor if you have stomach pain and suspect it is related to taking the medicine.

Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the medicine than younger adults. It is particularly important that elderly patients report any side effects to their doctor immediately.

You may only take Contra-Schmerz plus with a prescription and under medical supervision if you:

  • are currently being treated by a doctor because of a serious illness;
  • suffer from asthma, hay fever, nasal polyps, chronic respiratory diseases or nettle fever;
  • ever had a stomach or duodenum - had an ulcer;
  • concomitantly taking anticoagulants («blood thinners») or medicines to lower blood pressure;
  • suffer from heart disease or kidney failure or increased fluid loss, e.g. due to heavy sweating diarrhea or after major operations; taking Contra-Pain plus can impair the function of the kidneys, which can lead to an increase in blood pressure and/or fluid retention (oedema);
  • have liver disease;
  • suffer from a rare inherited disease of the red blood cells called «glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency»;
  • are in a condition with an increased risk of bleeding (e.g. menstrual bleeding or injuries).
  • Acetylsalicylic acid (even at very low doses) inhibits the sticking together of blood platelets. There is therefore an increased tendency to bleed during and after operations (including minor operations such as tooth extraction), which can persist for several days after you have stopped taking it.

    Your doctor or dentist should be asked or informed about taking it before surgery.

    In low doses, acetylsalicylic acid reduces the excretion of uric acid. In patients who already tend to have low uric acid excretion, this can possibly trigger a gout attack.

    You should also consult your doctor if you suffer from pulse irregularities (cardiac arrhythmias).

    Adolescents from the age of 12 with fever, flu, chickenpox or other viral diseases may only take Contra-Scherz plus on the doctor's instructions and only as a second-line remedy. If these diseases lead to disorders of consciousness with vomiting or after they have disappeared, the doctor should be consulted immediately.

    Contra-Schmerz plus must not be used in children under the age of 12.

    The effect of certain medicines can be influenced if Contra-Schalm plus is used for a longer period of time:

    • The effect of cortisone preparations, anticonvulsants (antiepileptics), blood thinners, digoxin, lithium preparations for depression and blood sugar lowering drugs (e.g. insulin, sulfonylureas) can be increased.
    • The effect of gout medicines ( probenecid and sulfinpyrazone), water tablets (diuretics) and medicines for high blood pressure can be reduced.
    • When using antirheumatic medicines, valproic acid (medicines for epilepsy) or methotrexate (which is taken, for example, for chronic polyarthritis, see also «When should Contra-Scherz plus not be taken?») there may be an increase in the undesirable effects.
    • Contra-Scherz plus can be increased if cortisone preparations, alcohol or drugs from the group of so-called serotonin -Reuptake inhibitors for depression increase the risk of bleeding.
    • The effects and side effects of certain asthma medications containing the active ingredients theophylline or aminophylline are increased. You may feel restless or have palpitations.

    Tell your doctor, pharmacist or druggist if you

    • suffer from other illnesses,
    • have allergies or
    • take other medicines (including those you bought yourself!) or use them externally!
