What is elmex jelly and when is it used?

elmex® gelée is a concentrate for local fluoridation of tooth enamel and to increase caries resistance. elmex® jelly contains caries-inhibiting amine fluoride. It is to be used externally on the tooth surface. It is not used daily, but at weekly intervals.

elmex® gelée is suitable for caries prophylaxis with high caries activity, with sensitive tooth necks and enamel decalcification under removable splints, partial dentures and orthodontic appliances.

When should elmex gelée not be used?

•In the event of hypersensitivity to one of the ingredients.

•For detachment of the oral mucosa.

•For bone and/or dental fluorosis.

•For people in whom control of the swallowing reflex is not guaranteed (e.g. children under 6 years of age).

When is caution required when taking / using elmex gelée?

To avoid poisoning through swallowing, elmex® jelly should not be used if the swallowing reflex cannot be controlled.

In children under 8 years of age, use should be supervised by parents.

Because of the peppermint flavor and spearmint oil content, patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases should consult their doctor/dentist before using elmex® jelly.

After the application of elmex® gelée, systemic fluoride intake (e.g. through fluoride tablets) should be suspended for a few days.

Incompatibilities exist with surfactants (soap solutions) and all soluble calcium, magnesium and aluminum salts.

The immediate intake of calcium, magnesium (e.g. milk) and aluminum (medicines for the treatment of stomach problems; antacids) after treatment with elmex® jelly can impair the effect of the fluorides.

Inform your doctor, dentist, pharmacist or druggist if you suffer from other illnesses, have allergies or are taking other medicines (even those you bought yourself!) or using them externally!

Can elmex jelly be taken/used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Systematic scientific studies on the use of elmex® jelly during pregnancy were not performed.
